As a geek, I end up with geeky t-shirts. As a Linux User Group
member and attendant of events like LinuxWorld Expo, I often
end up with a lot of free t-shirts.
Here's a collection of scans of interesting shirts I've collected;
both geeky and otherwise. Many have been thrown away or donated to
charity. Many others I still wear on a regular basis.
1995
- Just a Bill
The "I'm just a bill" shirt, from the 1970s Schoolhouse Rock
cartoons.
1996
- Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (MST3K)
I actually bought this for Melissa, but she isn't into t-shirts,
so I wear it occasionally.
1997
- Smartwine (Donated)
Smartwine Magazine was one of the first large websites, and was
particularly successful until about the time they decided to make
a print magazine. I worked for them as a web developer, creating
a number of search engines and a live chat room where they had
live interviews with famous wine and food people.
- Thursday Night Live (Donated)
I took over as videographer and director of a local cable comedy
TV show in Novato called "Thursday Night Live" (or
sometimes "Monday Night Live," if they had to meet on
Mondays).
1998
- SSU Computer Science Club (Donated)
My graduating year at Sonoma State University, someone made
this (rather egotistical ;^) ) t-shirt for the
Computer Science club.
- Front - "We'll have jobs"
(apparently unlike other majors)
- Back - Grasping the earth
- Link Exchange (Donated)
At one point, I was running Link Exchange banners on my website.
(For every two impressions on your site, they show your banner on
someone else's. I was getting such huge traffic on some of my sites
that it was perfect free advertising for me!) In the summer of
1998, the folks at Link Exchange invited me to come to their
office in San Francisco as part of a small focus group.
I got this goofy Link Exchange 'banner collage' shirt, and
a bunch of extra banner appearances. (Soon after, they were bought
by Microsoft and eventually renamed "bCentral.")
- Tekken 3 (Donated)
Ever since playing Tekken 2 in the arcade for the first time,
I've been a huge fan of the game. I got two friends addicted
immediately (both girls, oddly enough), and bought a PlayStation
in anticipation of its release. When I bought Tekken 3,
I got this cool t-shirt.
1999
- KDE
A KDE shirt, from back when I first ran KDE (1.0). I forget
where I picked it up...
- Front - With 'Konqi' the dragon
- Will Code For Chinese Food
A t-shirt I got at a Bay Area Linux User Group (BALUG) meeting
(they meet at a chinese restaurant). I believe it was the first
time I saw Linus Torvalds (creator of Linux) in the flesh!
- VA Research Linux Systems
A grey VA t-shirt with their old, angled logo, back when they
called themselves "VA Research."
- Front
- Back ("Where do you want to
go tomorrow?")
- Bill's Games
A simple shirt I made for my game website, BillsGames.com.
I sold many to devoted fans, and have tons more (hint, hint!)
2000
- LUGOD
The first (grey) Linux Users' Group of Davis t-shirt!
(Not to be confused with the ugly dark blue ones we made later.)
Many other folks still wear their's regularly, too!
- The Gimp (2037)
A white shirt for the excellent paint program, "The Gimp."
- The Gimp (Manipulate)
A pretty blue shirt for "The Gimp."
- Got DeCSS?
A shirt showing the code to DeCSS. (Too long to explain here!)
- <body>
An HTML joke T-shirt. "<body>" on the front, and
"</body>" on the back. (No, I didn't get the matching
"<head>" baseball cap.)
2001
- Linux Journal
I got this Linux Journal magazine shirt at LinuxWorld Expo
in San Francisco in August 2001.
- Front
- Back - "In a world without
fences... who needs gates?"
- Opera
I got this Opera web browser shirt from an Opera booth at the
Internet World Wireless West convention in San Jose (when I
got my Sharp Zaurus - it runs Opera, by the way).
- Front - "Opera, the rebel browser"
- BayTV (Donated)
My brother did videography and editing for the San Francisco
Bay Area TV channel (owned by KRON-TV) "BayTV," and gave me
this sweatshirt.
- Front - "BayTV - Your TV"
- Atari T-Shirt
A nice big Atari 'fuji' logo on a dark blue t-shirt. Yum!
Bought from B&C Computervisions in the bay area.
- Red Hat
I believe I got this shirt at a LUGOD meeting.
- Circus Linux!
A shirt I made for my game "Circus Linux!", which I'm fairly
proud of.
- Front ("What Goes Up...")
- Back ("...Must Come Down")
- Mad Bomber
A cool long-sleeve shirt I made for my Kaboom! clone,
"Mad Bomber."
- No Starch Press (White)
I won this t-shirt as part of a video game programming contest.
My game "Vectoroids" won 3rd place, so I got a book from
No Starch, a magazine subscription to Linux Journal
(which I believe I gave to the 4th-place winner), a game from
Loki Software, and this shirt.
- VA Linux Systems
A black VA t-shirt with their newer, curvy logo, but back when they
were still called "VA Linux Systems", not
"VA Software."
- Front
- Back ("Open Source.
It's the difference between trust and antitrust.")
- Classic Gaming Expo
A shirt I got at my first CG Expo, held in Las Vegas.
- Electronic Frontier Foundation
I got an EFF shirt when I donated to them. You should, too!
- nerdbooks.com
A shirt I got from my friend Dave, who runs the excellent (and huge)
computer bookstore in Roseville (and online), Nerdbooks.
- Linux10
A shirt sold for the picnic and barbecue for
the Linux operating system's 10th anniversary.
2002
- New Breed Software T-shirt
I created a t-shirt for my New Breed Software website.
- Front - Hatching penguin logo
- Back - "The best software in life is
free"
- Arcade Machine
A nifty ThinkGeek.com shirt with a stylized arcade video game,
often mistaken for a stackable washer/dryer, sadly...
- Hardware Problem
Another ThinkGeek shirt. I love programming. I hate hardware.
- Front - "Don't blame me,
it's a hardware problem."
- Atari Polo
A stitched 'fuji' logo on a dark blue polo shirt. Perfect for
letting my videogamer side show through in my 'business casual'
attire for work.
Bought from B&C Computervisions in the bay area.
- Linus Torvalds Has a Posse
I made this shirt in homage of the "Andre the Giant"
stickers I see everywhere (Wil Wheaton also has a posse).
- Tux Paint baseball jersey
I created a shirt for my childrens' drawing program,
"Tux Paint." This is one of the cutest shirts I have!
- New Breed Software Polo
I made a polo shirt for my New Breed Software site,
and ended up buying myself one (for wearing at work, I suppose).
- Trolltech
I got a Trolltech shirt at LinuxWorld Expo.
- Picn*x-11
A shirt I made for Picn*x-11, the picnic and barbecue for
the Linux operating system's 11th anniversary.
Pretty cute, if I do say so myself!
